‘Everybody’ Said Harris ‘Was Too Far to the Right’ in 2019

During Thursday's MSNBC broadcast of “Deadline: White House,” Rep. James Clyburn (D-South Carolina) said that when 2024 Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris last ran for president, “everyone” criticized her for being “too right of center,” but that Harris is actually “where the majority of the American people think she is.”

Clyburn said:[I]What's interesting is that when she ran in 2019, before she dropped out, everyone was saying she was too right of center. Then all of a sudden, this time, as expected, we started hearing people say she's too left of center. Where is she? She's right where the majority of the American people are. …I used to be, my father was a very conservative man, and he taught us to conserve energy, to conserve money, but he never asked for a conservative offering from the congregation. He always asked for a liberal offering. So I believe there are times to be conservative, there are times to be liberal, there are times to be progressive. We have to continue to do that. [on] “It's our journey toward a more perfect union. And if that means sparing or preserving or liberalizing efforts, let's do what's necessary given the times and circumstances we find ourselves in. And she is.”
