Sen. Joe Manchin (I-West Virginia), a former Democrat turned independent, on Thursday endorsed former Republican Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan in the state's Senate race.
Manchin's support is a blow to little-known Democratic candidate Angela Alsobrooks, who is under pressure to thwart Hogan's push to flip a normally Democratic-held Maryland Senate seat to Republicans, which would likely give Republicans a supermajority if Democrats lose it.
“Forget Democrat or Republican,” Manchin said. said DC News Now. “Larry Hogan is exactly the right person with the right attitude for the job. He's not afraid to make anti-partisan statements and he's not swayed by any party or any ideology.”
Manchin, who hails from a heavily Republican state and has long been a thorn in the side of Democrats, has appeared to work with Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (R-Ariz.) to block some of the more radical measures proposed by the Biden administration in 2021 and 2022.
Hogan and Also Brooks are in the doldrums Single-digit competitionAccording to the poll, only about one-third of voters know Who is Also Brooks? Former Governor Hogan has high favorability ratings among many demographics, including black voters, women and independents.
Republican House Minority Leader Chuck Schumer appears concerned that Hogan could pull off an upset in the Democratic-majority state, which President Joe Biden won by 33 points in 2020.
The Cook Political Report rates the race as “Probably Democratic.”
