Media Bury Kamala Harris’s Disastrous First Solo Interview

The mainstream media either did not report on Vice President Kamala Harris' first solo interview in eight weeks since she entered the presidential race or falsely claimed it was a huge success.

Appearing on Philadelphia's WPVI-TV, better known as 6ABC, Harris rambled on and struggled to form coherent thoughts in response to five straightforward questions from reporter Brian Taff.

The Harris campaign leaned on the local ABC affiliate after the ABC News moderator sided with Harris during last week's debate. Tough asked specific questions but didn't follow up on Harris' answers, likely due to time constraints.

question For example, when asked about specific policies that would lower costs and make life more affordable for Americans, Harris spoke about her middle-class upbringing and how her neighbors took good care of their lawns.

A few minutes into her response, Harris finally spoke about the “opportunity economy,” mentioning plans for tax credits for small business owners and down payment help for first-time home buyers.

When asked what makes her different from President Joe Biden, Harris again struggled, alluding to the fact that she is younger than Biden (“a new generation of leader”) and repeating her point about the “opportunity economy.” The rest of her answer was incoherent.

Harris' only somewhat clear answer on gun control was contradictory: “We're not taking away anybody's guns,” she said, before saying she supports an “assault weapons ban” that would do just that.

The interview reinforced concerns that Ms. Harris may not be able to answer unscripted questions, suggesting that her performance in last week's debate, which many viewers thought was strong, was the result of rehearsed answers. (Indeed, Ms. Harris dodged questions asked of her at various times during the debate, most notably the first one: “When it comes to the economy, do you think Americans are better off than they were four years ago?”)

But the mainstream media either did not report Harris' disastrous interview or distorted what happened.

deadline Reported The interview was reported under the headline “No talk of pet eaters, Kamala Harris promises 'new generation of leadership' in first solo TV interview as presidential candidate.” Reporter Dominic Patten wrote that Harris “stood her grounds and remained focused on the economy, support for working Americans, gun rights and reducing crime.” (Crime reduction was not mentioned in the interview, and Patten ignored the fact that Harris had largely dodged a question about making life more affordable.)

Newsweek Published The “Key Takeaways” section informs readers that Harris “detailed her 'Opportunity Economy' plan,” but in fact Harris avoided details and rambled on about her economic policy points.

Axios.com is easier to understand articleBut they did hide the fact that Harris could barely string together a sentence. They cleaned up one of Harris' answers by changing the question she was asked. For example, reporter Sareen Habesian wrote, “When asked about her economic plan, Harris pointed to plans for tax credits for starting small businesses and down payment assistance for first-time home buyers.” Harris wasn't asked about her economic plan in general, but about the specifics of “lowering prices and making life more affordable.”

The BBC also positive The article glossed over Harris' poor performance, but unlike Axios, noted that “when asked how she would lower prices for Americans, rather than a universal plan, Harris mentioned plans for small businesses and homeowners, noting that 'it's unclear what the plans would cost or who they would cover.'

Harris appeared on CNN last month, sitting next to running mate Tim Walz for the first time since she began campaigning in July, simply saying, Published 6 ABC ended the interview without further comment.
