A toddler in Portland, Oregon, has died of a suspected fentanyl overdose, authorities said.
2 year old girl Died She was rushed to the hospital from her home in the 9000 block of Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard after police reported she was in cardiac arrest, KPTV reported.
The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) arrived at the residence at approximately 2:30 p.m., took statements from firefighters and seized the first evidence from the home.
PPB Chief Bob Day said a preliminary investigation found fentanyl contributed to the child's death.
“I am so saddened to hear of the loss of this little girl,” Day told the outlet. “This tragedy will impact her family, friends, neighbors, emergency responders and our entire community.”
“The Portland Police Bureau is committed to investigating and apprehending those who are illegally distributing these dangerous substances, and we will continue to work with our partners in the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office to ensure they are prosecuted,” he added.
The media outlet did not release the girl's identity, but her neighbours were saddened by her tragic outcome.
“It's really depressing, something happened to a child, it's not good, there's a lot of drugs in this area, it's a huge problem,” local resident Paul Hooson said.
“It's horrible. I have children and grandchildren and it makes me sick. I don't want to think about it and whoever was involved needs to be arrested,” said Debra Fox, who also lives nearby.
An official cause of death has yet to be released by the coroner's office, but this tragedy is not the only recent child death suspected to be caused by fentanyl.
