15-year-old killed in NYC subway surfing mishap as rider’s head strikes beam: sources

A 15-year-old boy died in a subway surfing accident when he was hit by a low beam as a subway train arrived at a Brooklyn station on Monday morning, law enforcement sources said.

Sources said the boy was on top of a G train that arrived at Smith 9th Street station around 10:15 a.m.

Rescue teams were seen gathering on the tracks beneath the trestle at the station entrance, and a stretcher was seen nearby.

Subway service was significantly disrupted while police investigated the incident, with trains suspended between Bedford Nostrand and Church Avenue, the MTA said.

This is just the latest fatality in an alarming trend of teenagers riding the subway filming dangerous acts and frequently posting the videos to go viral on social media — at least six people have been killed as a result of this reckless behavior so far this year.

In July, another 15-year-old boy died while subway surfing in the Rockaways.

Then, on the same day in June, two young people were injured, one of them fatally, while surfing the web on the subway.

Earlier in June, a 14-year-old boy in Queens was injured when he hit his head on a beam while entering a station.

At least five people have died while subway surfing in 2023, with hundreds of reported incidents.

The trend has prompted state and city leaders to launch public information campaigns to educate teenagers about the dangers, but NYPD data shows incidents are up from last year.
