Actor John Leguizamo, speaking at the Emmy Awards broadcast on ABC on Sunday, criticized Hollywood for marginalizing Latinos for decades and casting non-Latino white actors in Latino roles.
He also praised controversial DEI efforts and addressed the upcoming presidential election, arguing that Latinos will decide the outcome in November.
John Leguizamo didn't hold back when he took to the stage at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles during a live broadcast on Sunday.
“For years I refused to complain about the limited roles my cast members were given – the hot-sex weed, the Latin lover, the maid, the gang buddy. I eventually learned that not complaining changed nothing,” he said, drawing applause from the celebrity audience.
He further added: Carlito's Way Co-star Al Pacino plays Cuban gangster Tony Montana. Scarface The late Natalie Wood criticized her for playing a Puerto Rican. West Side Story.
Leguizamo also used the Emmys to praise DEI, the diversity, equity and inclusion initiative that ignores merit and replaces it with a communitarian concept that includes “equity,” meaning equality of outcome.
The actor expressed pride in being “one of Hollywood's DEI adopters.”
“D is for diligence, E is for excellence and I is for imagination. Every single person in this room tonight has dedicated their life to diligence, excellence and imagination,” he said.
Speaking on the red carpet earlier in the day, Leguizamo urged politicians, including Kamala Harris, to aggressively woo the Latino vote. “We're going to decide who the next president is,” he told The Associated Press.
