During a recent visit to the construction site, President Donald Trump emphasized that the ongoing project at the White House involves more than just a ballroom. He pointed out the intricate details of the addition, suggesting that the ballroom plays a crucial role in protecting various facilities being built beneath it, which include military hospitals and conference rooms.
“You really should see how complex it is,” Trump remarked, indicating the construction area. “The ballroom is like a shield for everything else going on down there.” He added that this project extends quite deep—about six stories—and that some floors are already completed.
“We’re actually constructing different kinds of spaces,” he explained. “There are military hospitals, research facilities, and rooms specifically designed for military use, including the ballroom itself.” He noted that the construction is already “very deep”—two floors down and approximately six floors in total.
Trump also spoke about the upper levels, mentioning capabilities for drone operations. “We can deploy various troops,” he said, hinting at enhanced tactical advantages. “This is built for our own use, not for enemy forces,” he clarified. The height of the structure offers expansive views across Washington, providing clear sightlines, according to Trump.
This construction update came shortly after a ruling by Senator Elizabeth McDonough, which indicated that a Republican plan for allocating $1 billion towards the White House project didn’t comply with specific legislative protocols. Republicans are currently trying to amend the situation.
Republicans are leveraging budget reconciliation to support various initiatives, including the banquet hall project, as they seek to advance their objectives in the Senate with minimal opposition.
Each piece of legislation must comply with stringent rules, and Democrats view this ruling as a significant win.
In light of the ruling, Trump reportedly urged Senate Majority Leader John Thune to dismiss McDonough from her position.
While critics have raised concerns about the expansive ballroom and its associated underground facilities, it’s not unusual for presidents to upgrade the White House. Historical renovations have often sparked debates, and the current White House bears scant resemblance to the structure that John Adams first occupied.
As noted, “The only trace of the original structure is a section of the sandstone exterior wall.” However, the recent thwarted assassination attempt has renewed discussions about the pressing need for a secure banquet hall.
Trump remarked on Truth Social regarding the necessity of such a facility, attributing its urgency to security incidents like the recent shooting. “If a secure military banquet hall were already in place, this would not have happened,” he asserted, conveying that speeding up construction is critical.
