Texas homeowners Investigated Police say he shot the man, believing him to be a robber.
San Antonio police said they responded to a call of a burglary in progress at a home on Hicks Avenue around 5 a.m. Thursday.
“You have to be careful about your safety these days, especially with all the crazy people out there these days.”
When police arrived on scene, the 43-year-old homeowner told police he had shot the intruder with a handgun, but police did not find any victims inside the residence. Police later found a 48-year-old man with a gunshot wound inside the detached garage of the Vanderbilt Street home.
The suspect was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was taken into custody on suspicion of theft.
Neighbors told KENS-TV they heard four muffled gunshots that morning.
Rafael Olivarez told KENS he was working at the scene near his home and witnessed the aftermath of the collision involving multiple police vehicles.
“You have to be careful about your safety these days,” he said. “Especially with all the crazy people out there these days. Make sure you lock your doors. If you have any valuables, make sure you keep them inside at night.”
But other neighbors said they were tired of shootings in their neighborhood, with some even suggesting the homeowner may have known the robbery suspect before the incident.
Police said the homeowner was not initially charged because state law allows people to defend their own property, but the investigation is ongoing.
