Jacoby Brissett appeared to wake up in pain Friday morning after the Patriots' 24-3 loss to the Jets.
“It really wasn't about the play, they just beat us, to be honest with you.” Brissett told reporters: on friday.
Brissett had been sacked just four times in the Patriots' first two games against the Seahawks and Bengals, but was sacked five times against the Jets.
Reserve Drake May, making his debut as a cleaner, was also beaten on a one-yard scramble by Jamien Sherwood and was sacked twice more.
Coach Jerrod Mayo initially was not forthcoming about whether Brissett would continue to start in place of Mayet, but he seemed to agree with the blow Brissett took.
“Jacoby is our quarterback until he's not our quarterback anymore. I thought he played very tough and very dogged last night.” Mayo told reporters:.
The Patriots' offensive line, a major concern before the season, is going to have to get better regardless of who's at quarterback to stay in the game.
Prior to allowing seven sacks on “Thursday Night Football,” the Patriots had the third-worst offensive line rating according to Pro Football Focus, so they'll almost certainly be the worst in the league once all of Week 3's games are played out.
Brissett was pressured on 12 of his 23 dropbacks (52.2 pressure rate), a dismal number for a struggling team.
No doubt the Patriots will not want to move the 22-year-old Maye back with little to no usability or throwing time, potentially leading to a long-term injury.
New England next plays the 49ers, a team with a highly vaunted defense, on Sept. 29.
