North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper (Democrat) declared in an interview with Bloomberg on Friday that “you can't compromise a woman's right to choose. I don't think you can compromise the fact that there are women whose lives are at risk because doctors are afraid the government is going to come between them and their patients.” He also opposed any compromise on banning abortions after 15 or 16 weeks because “a lot of these cases are very complicated and often involve parents who really want the baby but have extraordinary medical complications. That's an issue that should be left to women and doctors.”
Bloomberg co-host Anne-Marie Hordern asked, “Another major issue in this campaign, particularly in North Carolina, if you look at the polls, is abortion. This is an issue that you've been focusing on. One thing I've gotten from the polls is that North Carolina voters seem to want to be neutral. They seem to be aligned on, for example, putting the abortion cutoff at 15 weeks. Do you think this is an issue that Democrats and Republicans can compromise on?”
Cooper responded: “I don't think you can compromise a woman's right to choose. I don't think you can compromise the fact that there are women out there whose lives are at risk because of doctors who are afraid that the government is going to step in and get between doctor and patient. And that's exactly what's happening all across the country.”
Hordern then asked: “But do you think there could be a compromise, like 15 or 16 weeks?”
Cooper responded, “We can't talk about women's health like that, because many of these cases are incredibly complicated and often involve parents who really want a child but have special medical complications. This is an issue that should be left to women and their doctors. That's why people like Donald Trump and Lt. Governor Mark Robinson (R) are so dangerous. They believe politicians should be in the exam room with women and their doctors, that there should be strict rules, and as a result, they're putting women's lives at risk and taking away their constitutional rights.”
