In an interview with ABC News on Friday, Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) responded to accusations from Republicans that comments made by 2024 Republican presidential candidate about former President Donald Trump may have led to the assassination attempt on Trump, saying, “We should look into the identities of these two psychopaths who carried out these attacks.” “Donald Trump incited the attack on the Capitol on January 6th. Republicans may want us to stop talking about that and what it means, but that's a fact.”
ABC reporter Jay O'Brien asked, “Senator, before we leave you, I just wanted you to respond to a question about some of my colleagues in the House of Representatives who continue to say things about former President Trump, such as he's a threat to democracy, and who have accused Democrats of creating an environment that led to an assassination attempt on the former president. Is it right for Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) to make such statements?”
Kaine responded: “That's a desperate lie, a fabrication. First of all, look at the identity of these two crazy people who carried out this attack. And Donald Trump instigated the attack on the Capitol on January 6th. Republicans might want us to stop talking about that and what it means, but this is a fact. I often come across people on the Republican side who try to downplay that, but this is a fact. I'm really, really glad the Secret Service did a good job, first of all, in Pennsylvania. I think they did a great job in Florida. Thank goodness. And we need to devote more resources to the Secret Service. And if it's not just a matter of resources but leadership, then we've got to get that right.”
