Gavin Newsom claims Elon Musk can’t grasp new AI laws

California Governor Gavin Newsom suggested that X owner Elon Musk doesn't understand the state's new law restricting election-related content.

New Law, The Protecting Democracy from Deepfake Deception Act of 2024 was signed into law in mid-September.

This bill digest The law states that within 60 days after an election, any person or entity is prohibited from distributing false audio or visual media about a political candidate if it is intended to “disparage the candidate's reputation or to mislead voters into voting for or against a candidate.”

The law also requires all “large online platforms” to block false content before and after elections.

These new rules could result in the censorship of memes and images that contain AI-generated material about candidates and upcoming elections.

When asked about the law during a recent press conference, Governor Newsom suggested Musk may not understand the law.

“We believe in truth and trust, and we believe this law is sound and will be upheld in the courts,” Governor Newsom continued.

Ian Miles Chong, who posted a video of Gov. Newsom's recent press conference, told Blaze News that by embracing such a law, the governor must think his constituents are incompetent.

“The responsibility remains [viewers] “I urge them to check the facts and not believe everything they see on their screens. Newsom is not their nanny and he should stop acting like one,” Chung added.
