Kansas father shoots wife in the chest at elementary school drop-off

A Kansas father shot and killed his wife during a “domestic dispute” while dropping off their children at elementary school Monday morning, causing the school to go on lockdown.

The man reportedly opened fire shortly after the couple dropped off their children at Cessna Elementary School in Wichita, shooting the wife in the chest.

The school day began at 9 a.m. and police received a call at 9:15 a.m. about shots fired outside.

Witnesses said they saw a man point a gun at his wife and shoot her in the chest near a Lyft car that had taken the family to elementary school.

“She ran to the school to get help and he chased her,” Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter said. Kake News.

“At the time our deputies arrived, he had a gun pointed at her head.”

Easter said the officer took cover and waited a moment until the man was far enough away from him before firing two shots at him.

The man was detained and hospitalized in very critical condition, while the woman is in critical condition.

The school was placed on lockdown and school staff quickly escorted all students into classrooms, and police notified local residents that there was no active shooter inside the elementary school.

“Unfortunately, this phenomenon does occur in areas where schools are located. […] “I know that may be scary for parents, but the fact is that police were on the scene within two minutes of the shooting being reported and did not come into the school itself, where children were at risk.”

All kindergarten classes were canceled for the day, and parents were given the option to pick up their children.
