Over the past 20 months, 747,000 people have been removed from the North Carolina Board of Elections' voter registration list, officials said in a statement Thursday.

The “vast majority” of those removed from the rolls were deemed ineligible to register because they either moved within the state and failed to register their new address or did not vote, according to a press release from the State Board of Elections. The commission said personal expungement requests, felony convictions, death, and out-of-state relocation are also reasons for expungement.

Additionally, the state will hold a gubernatorial election between Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein and Republican Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson.

Additionally, residents of Wake County, North Carolina, had filed a legal complaint alleging that both their driver's license and Social Security number were missing from the county's voter registration form.
“Defendants jeopardized the integrity of the state's elections by failing to collect certain legally required information before registering these applicants to vote,” the complaint states. .
There are currently approximately 7.7 million registered voters in North Carolina.
