Trump Endorses Dual Candidates in South Carolina Gubernatorial Race
President Donald Trump has backed two candidates aiming to be South Carolina’s next governor, just days before the June 23rd Republican runoff election.
On Friday, he endorsed both Alan Wilson, the state’s Attorney General, and Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette on Truth Social, saying, “You can’t go wrong with either of them.” He added, “You can’t hurt the other by supporting one, so I’m going to support both South Carolina Governors Pam Evett and Alan Wilson!”
Previously, Trump showed robust support for Evette on May 29th, labeling her as an “America First Patriot” who had been loyal to him since the beginning. She has served as the Lieutenant Governor since 2019.
Wilson, who has held the position of state attorney general since 2011, expressed gratitude towards the president and affirmed his commitment to work alongside Trump to “restore America’s power, drain the swamp, protect our freedoms, and put working families first.”
In the preliminary votes released, Evette secured 136,480 votes, accounting for 28.9%, followed closely by Wilson with 123,643 votes, which is 26.1%. Since neither candidate achieved the necessary 50% majority for a direct win, a runoff between them is scheduled for June 23, supported by Trump.
This approach of endorsing multiple candidates isn’t new for Trump. He also endorsed Gina Swoboda and Jay Feely in the upcoming Arizona Republican primary, along with endorsements for Eric Schmidt and Eric Greitens in Missouri’s 2022 Republican Senate primary.
