Trump Edges Out Harris Among Independents

An Economist/YouGov poll this week found former President Donald Trump leading Vice President Kamala Harris among independents.

investigation asked Registered voters: “Who do you plan to vote for in the November 2024 presidential election?'' Overall, Ms. Harris is seen as having a 3-point advantage over Mr. Trump nationally, with 47% compared to 44% for the former president. %.

Another 1% said Green Party candidate Jill Stein and 1% said “other.” Another 5% said they were unsure, and 2% said they would not vote.

But Trump once again led Harris, especially among independents, with 42% of independents saying they would vote for Trump, compared to 40% for Harris. A further 11% are still unsure.

When asked who they prefer, independents are divided, with 42% saying they prefer Harris over Trump and 42% saying they prefer Trump over Harris.

Notably, 13% of independents who said they supported Harris said they might change their minds between now and the election. Conversely, only 5% of independents who support President Trump say they are likely to change their mind between now and the election. 95% said they would “definitely” vote for Trump.

The poll also found that 32% of independents believe Trump will win the election over Harris, regardless of who they endorse. Thirty-one percent agreed with Harris, while 37% were still unsure.

The survey was conducted between September 21 and 27, 2024 among 1,622 US adults.

Trump not only tied or beat Harris in a series of polls in battleground states this week, but also won 48% to Harris' 47% in the national left-leaning Quinnipiac poll. He also made headlines for taking a points lead.

Enthusiasm for Harris fell among Democrats from 75% to 70%, but rose among Republicans from 68% to 71%, according to Q-poll. Nearly two-thirds of voters (64%) want another debate between Trump and Harris.

The Quinnipiac results are the first national poll showing President Trump in the lead since the Sept. 19 Rasmussen Report poll, according to RealClearPolitics. Others indicated Harris with a slight lead or a tied race.

Recent polls also show that key battleground states such as Pennsylvania are wavering in their tracks as the race approaches.
