MANTEO, N.C. — A single-engine plane crashed into a wooded area at the Wright Brothers National Memorial First Flight Airport Saturday afternoon, killing multiple people, the National Park Service said.
According to witnesses, the crash occurred at 5 p.m., and the plane was about to land at the airport, the Park Service said in a news release.
The plane caught fire after the crash, the park service said. Kill Devil Hills Fire Department and other local fire departments fought the fire.
The airport will be closed until further notice, according to the Park Service.
The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the incident. The US Federal Aviation Administration has also been notified.
The Wright Brothers National Memorial will be closed Sunday, according to the Park Service.
