California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) on Thursday signed a bill reversing policies that threatened parents of out-of-school students championed by Kamala Harris when she was San Francisco district attorney and California attorney general.
Breitbart News points out that:
As San Francisco District Attorney and California Attorney General, Kamala Harris prosecuted parents of out-of-school children as part of a dubious effort to improve attendance rates that disproportionately hurt people of color in the state.
When Harris last ran for president in 2019, she tried to withdraw her support for truancy prosecutions. by mistake She claimed that no one was imprisoned as a result of her policies, although in reality her parents have been prosecuted and imprisoned.
Former Breitbart News White House correspondent Charlie Spiering wrote in his book about Harris: Amateur Hour: Kamala Harris in the White HouseHarris was lenient with cop killers, murderers, and gun criminals, and failed 1,000 drug cases tainted by flawed evidence, but was tough on parents of truant children. She “publicly demonstrated that she was using her authority to instill fear in the hearts of families who attend public schools,” Spearing recalled.
This issue was discussed on National Public Radio in 2019. noticed Harris' program hurt black and Latino parents, she said.
Newsom signs SB691says:
Under current law, when a student is first classified as truant, the school district must provide certain information to the student's parent or guardian, including that the student and the student's parent or guardian may be subject to prosecution. is required to notify. It is also recommended that a parent or guardian accompany the student to school and attend classes with the student throughout the day.
The bill, which goes into effect on July 1, 2025, would remove this specific information from notices, including information that mental health and support services may be available to students and their families. It is mandatory to include additional information. and allowing school staff to meet with students and families to develop strategies to support students' enrollment.
of san francisco chronicle noticed:
As San Francisco district attorney, Harris prosecuted some parents as part of an effort to reduce truancy.
…
As attorney general, she supported a bill signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2010 that allows parents of chronically absent students to be prosecuted for misdemeanors and sentenced to up to a year in prison.
Harris after that expressed I feel sorry for the policy. She was–and chronicle — argues that she was not personally responsible for incarcerating her parents, even though that was clearly the letter of the law that she promoted and zealously enforced.
