This is an attempt at infectious humor.
“Saturday Night Live” has made a series of nasty COVID-19 related revelations at the expense of former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is believed to be seeking a political comeback as the Big Apple's next mayor. I tried to spit it out.
“Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is reportedly already interested in running for mayor. Damn, he's moving through nursing homes faster than the coronavirus.” .” Comedian Michael Che hurt his ribs on SNL's “Weekend Update.”
The Post reported on Saturday that Mr. Cuomo, 66, told aides that impresario Eric Adams had to step down or face criminal charges related to pay-for-play allegations. He has reportedly said that if he is fired, he plans to run for mayor.
Mr. Cuomo was himself forced from office in 2021 over a sexual misconduct scandal.
Adams, 64, was indicted Tuesday in his own explosives case, a charge that could carry up to 45 years in prison. He faces federal charges of bribery, conspiracy and wire fraud for allegedly accepting gifts in exchange for favors from a foreign government, Turkey.
“SNL” also poked fun at Adams, with comedian Devon Walker playing Hezner.
“Do I look like I have any guilt towards you?” Adams pretended to be joking before being asked why he got involved with Turkey.
“Have you ever had Turkish Delight? That's a briefcase with $100,000 in it,” he said.
The scandal-scarred mayor has denied any wrongdoing in the incident, claiming he was the victim of political blowback related to opposing the White House on the border crisis.
Mr. Cuomo has been embroiled in controversy over sexual harassment scandals and revelations that his administration vastly underestimated the state's COVID-19 nursing home death toll on his watch. .
He had previously ordered nursing homes to mix COVID-19 patients with one of the populations most vulnerable to the deadly virus.
The former Empire State governor recently told a Congressional committee that the now-infamous state health department report vastly underestimated the number of nursing home deaths from COVID-19 in the state. He denied that there was.
But emails and other documents show that Mr. Cuomo's aides communicated about the governor's own compilation of the report.
Rumors have long swirled that he was aiming for a political comeback. The next New York mayoral election is scheduled to take place in 2025, although there is talk of a possible special election if Adams resigns or is removed from office.
“Governor Cuomo has spent his life in public service, fighting for and serving the people of New York State. He will do whatever he can to help,” Rich Azzopardi, Cuomo's longtime spokesperson, previously said. he told the Post. “However, this speculation is premature as Governor Cuomo believes Mayor Adams is entitled to due process.”
Meanwhile, shortly after the charges against Adams were announced, Andrew Cuomo's brother Chris, who hosts a show of the same name on NewsNation, warned against jumping to conclusions about the mayor's charges.
“Why are his party members acting like he confessed? They need to know that prosecution requires only probable cause…” Young says. Mr. Cuomo said: Late last week, before explaining the grand jury process.
“I'm not saying Adams didn't do it. I don't know,” he said.
The younger Cuomo also briefly alluded to how Democrats rushed to turn against him over allegations of misconduct in 2021.
