Aaron Rodgers' famous rhythm may have surprised the Jets.
Gang Green committed four offensive pre-snap penalties in Sunday's 10-9 loss to the Broncos, something coach Robert Saleh said needs to be looked into.
“We have to figure out if we're good enough or if we're ready for all the rhythms,” Saleh said after the offense failed to score a touchdown for the first time this year. “Cadence wasn't an issue at all.” [training] camp. It felt like our strategy was going pretty well. Obviously, we took a big step back today. ”
Rodgers didn't hide his feelings about the idea of loosening the rhythm.
“That's one way,” he said. “Another way is to hold them accountable.”
Adjustments will definitely be made after this performance.
The Jets were whistled for 15 penalties, 13 of which were allowed.
They were sloppy, self-inflicted mistakes that destroyed the drive.
Perhaps the biggest factor was a false start by left guard John Simpson on fourth-and-goal from the Broncos' 1-yard line early in the second quarter.
The Jets had to settle for a field goal instead of a potential touchdown.
“That was a play that could have won the game,” said Simpson, who committed two penalties. “We have to be better.”
Late in the third quarter, receiver Allen Lazard caught a 12-yard pass.
After the play, he celebrated on the grass by signaling a first down with both hands, but was criticized for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Instead of having the ball at the Broncos' 18, the Jets moved it back to the Broncos' 33.
They made a field goal.
“I think that's new for the NFL. Usually they give warnings for unsportsmanlike conduct and things like that,” Lazard said. “Guys around the league are doing it every week. It's been around for a while. They didn't emphasize it in the offseason or anything. They just kind of threw it out there. “Obviously, I regret doing that. It looks like I can't signal first downs anymore.”
Through the first three weeks of the season, the Jets averaged six penalties per game for 62 yards.
There was a big problem with this surprising defeat.
“I know Allen got penalized for his celebration, but just because there were so many pre-snap penalties, this is unacceptable,” Saleh said. “That's something we have to clean up. There are always in-play penalties and they're going to happen, but pre-snap and post-snap penalties are unacceptable.”
