The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), led by President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, considers more than 500,000 criminal immigrants living in the United States a high priority for deportation. The government maintains unfilled detention space for migrants who are being detained.
Data released by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to Congress last week shows that the agency's non-custodial documents include more than 425,000 criminal immigrants with criminal convictions and more than 222,000 immigrants with criminal charges pending. It was revealed that it contained
By the end of the year, more than 8 million immigrants will be on ICE's non-custodial records. People on the non-custodial record are known to ICE but are living in American towns and cities while awaiting deportation hearings.
For reference, when former President Donald Trump left office in early 2021, there were only about 3.2 million immigrants on ICE's non-custodial docket, and Biden and Harris have increased the number of people on the docket. This shows that it has almost tripled.
Meanwhile, Biden-Harris' DHS is keeping ICE detention beds full.
Congress currently funds 41,500 detention beds, but the latest federal data shows show DHS has only 37,395 detention beds available, and more than 4,100 beds are vacant, available, but remain unused.
A recent report from the House Homeland Security Committee found that while Biden and Harris aim to reduce detention bed space, more than 85% of migrants arriving at the southern border end up being released into the U.S. interior. It was explained in detail that
DHS monitors just a few through its Alternative to Detention (ATD) program.
April, Acting ICE Director Patrick Lechleitner prompted Congress will fund at least 50,000 detention beds. Other experts suggest the federal government needs hundreds of thousands of detention beds to keep track of record numbers of illegal immigrants and keep migrants from being released into the U.S. interior.
