Jimmy Carter turns 100, becoming first US president to ever reach milestone age

Former President Jimmy Carter turned 100 on Tuesday, reaching a longevity milestone never achieved by any previous U.S. president.

Born Oct. 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, the soft-spoken peanut farmer was elected the 39th president of the United States in 1976, but during his tenure he faced energy shortages, the Cold War, and Iran. We faced headwinds in every situation, including the hostage situation. as commander-in-chief.

Although his one term in office was marked by upheaval and uncertainty both at home and abroad, Mr. Carter was instrumental in his tenure as president, including brokering the historic Camp David peace agreement in which Israel and Egypt formally recognized each other's governments. He achieved many important victories during this period.

After serving as Georgia's senator and governor, Mr. Carter sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1976, at a time when Georgia was still facing a post-Watergate crisis of confidence in government, as a moderate candidate. He ran as a reformist.

Carter and his running mate, Walter Mondale of Minnesota, defeated incumbent President Gerald Ford by a margin of 297 to 241 electoral votes.

“I will never lie. I will never make a misleading statement. I will never betray the trust you have placed in me. And I will never give up on controversial issues. “I will never avoid it,” he vowed at the time.

The Carter administration came into office at a time when the United States was reeling from the economic quagmire caused by the OPEC-induced gas crisis of the early 1970s. Subsequently, the 1979 crisis helped shape perceptions of his administration.

Carter withdrew the United States from the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow after Russia invaded Afghanistan on Christmas Eve of that year.

A failed rescue mission in 1980 that resulted in the deaths of eight U.S. service members left Carter with a loss of credibility on national security issues, leading to a damaging primary election against the late Democratic Party leader Ted. -Faced a challenge from within the party courtesy of Sen. Mr. Carter ultimately lost in a landslide to Mr. Ronald Reagan in 44 states to 6 states, the largest defeat in US election history.

Carter wrote an astonishing 32 books during his lifetime, the most recent of which was published in 2018, Faith: A Journey for All, which highlights the importance of spirituality in his life and in American history. I'm doing it.

He celebrated his 98th birthday in 2022 and attended a parade in his honor in his hometown, where he has lived in the same house as his wife, former first lady Rosalynn Carter, since 1961.

Last February, the Carter Center announced that the former president had decided to receive hospice care at home rather than “additional medical intervention” following a “series of brief hospitalizations.” He continues to receive hospice care to this day.

Rosalyn joined her husband in hospice care in November of the same year, and died two days after her symptoms were made public.

“Rosalynn has been my equal partner in everything I've accomplished,” Jimmy Carter said in a statement. “She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalyn existed in this world, I always knew someone would love and support me.”

At 100 years old, Carter has outlived his closest rival as the longest-living former president, former President George H.W. Bush, who died in November 2018 at age 94.

Former Presidents Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford both died at the age of 93, while John Adams and Herbert Hoover lived to be 90.
