Armed man allegedly tried to rob Army veteran, who tossed him over his back and growled, ‘Now you empty your pockets!’

Georgia State Police say an armed robber was caught by surprise when he tried to target a veteran and ended up knocking him to the pavement.

Gwinnett County Police said they responded to the incident at a gas station on Buford Drive early Friday morning.

“I leaned back and grabbed his head and slammed him to the ground.”

rusty field told WSB TV The altercation began when he pulled into a gas station with a flat tire and a man approached him and told him he was stuck and asked for help, police said.

“Listen, I have my own problems,” Fields reportedly told the man.

That's when he said he felt a gun in his back and the man forced him to kneel.

“He took my keys out of his pocket because I still felt it being shoved into my back,” he added.

Unfortunately for Fields, in his pocket was a bank envelope containing $12,000. When the man found the envelope, Fields said military training began.

“What I didn't want him to get was that bank envelope that was in his other pocket,” he continued. “I leaned back and grabbed his head and slammed him to the ground.”

Fields then allegedly told the man, “Now empty your pockets!”

Before the man could retrieve the envelope, he fled onto Interstate 985.

Fields said she called police and officers from the Gwinnett County North Police Station responded nearby. They said they were able to capture 28-year-old Johnny Roque, who was allegedly in possession of Fields' money. He was arrested on suspicion of armed robbery.

He said he was so grateful for the police officer's response that he wrote down the names of 11 people who helped him.

“I couldn’t believe how coordinated they were,” Fields said. “They arrived on scene quickly and had him within 30 minutes.”
