Elderly man dies 47 years after NYC shooting, death ruled homicide: cops

More than 47 years after he was shot in East Harlem, an elderly man has died, and his death has been ruled a homicide, authorities announced this week.

Police said Paul Dawkins was shot in the chest at about 6:40 a.m. on January 15, 1976, on East 103rd Street near Second Avenue.

Police said Dawkins lived several blocks from the scene and died from his injuries on April 22, 2023. He was 79 years old.

The city medical examiner's office ruled Dawkins' death a homicide, authorities announced Tuesday night.

The NYPD could not confirm Wednesday the circumstances of the decades-old shooting or whether Dawkins' death was connected to the shooting.

No arrests have been made and no suspect information is available.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
