Vermont border sector sees more than 19K migrants in one fiscal year

Officials said Wednesday that more than 19,000 illegal immigrants have been arrested in the northern border region over the past year.

During the 2024 fiscal year, which ran from Oct. 1, 2023, to Monday, officers at the U.S. Border Patrol's Swanton Sector along the U.S.-Canada border apprehended illegal immigrants from 97 countries, said District Patrol Chief Robert. Garcia said.

Officials say 19,222 migrants have been apprehended in the Swanton area, more than in the past 17 years combined. In fiscal year 2020, agents assigned to the department arrested 574 illegal immigrants, and the following year, 365 were arrested.

According to Border Patrol data, the number of arrests jumped to 1,065 in fiscal year 2022 and 6,925 in fiscal year 2023. Fox News Digital reached out to the Border Patrol and the office of Vermont Governor Phil Scott (R).

The Swanton area is 24,000 square miles and includes Vermont, Clinton, Essex, Franklin, St. Lawrence, and Herkimer counties in New York, and Coos, Grafton, and Carroll counties in New Hampshire.
