Vice President Kamala Harris announced $750 in aid for Hurricane Helen victims, just days after her and President Joe Biden's administration announced $8 billion in aid. new aid money For Ukraine.
Harris spent the weekend campaigning on the West Coast as hurricanes wreaked deadly destruction across the American Southwest, leaving hundreds of Americans dead and hundreds more missing.
On Wednesday, Harris visited Georgia, two days after former President Donald Trump's visit, and announced what many criticized as just $750 in aid to hurricane victims.
In a speech in Augusta, Georgia, Harris emphasized: “Federal relief and assistance we've been providing includes FEMA providing $750 to people who need to meet immediate needs like food and baby formula. And you can apply now .”
That $750 is $50 more than the government gave to Maui wildfire victims in 2023, many of whom lost their homes and loved ones.
Just a week ago, the Biden-Harris administration announced it would provide $8 billion to Ukraine.
Speaking alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House, Harris said: “As President Biden's significant announcement earlier today demonstrated, we will provide Ukraine with the security assistance it needs to succeed on the battlefield. I will continue to do so.”
The administration has sent at least $175 billion to Ukraine in the past two years since the war began.
The discrepancy in amounts paid for victims of Hurricane Helen and those of the war in Ukraine has sparked harsh criticism of the administration's poor response.
