Kevin Smith reveals ‘cheap’ movie he will pitch to Ben Affleck

Kevin Smith has new ideas for a collaboration with longtime friend Ben Affleck.

“Most of the stuff I do, I honestly never thought about bringing it to Ben and Matt,” Smith said, but admitted he has changed his mind about his latest initiative.

“There's something I've started writing recently that I like that's outside of my wheelhouse,” the “Dogma” director said.

“I grew up in the '70s, so as a young Catholic watching movies about Satanism was a hobby of mine,” Smith said. “God, that would have scared me to death when I was a kid. The ultimate evil.”

“So I'm writing this movie about a Satan-worshipping cult, and it's mature enough that when it's finished, I'm going to take this movie to the boys and say, 'I would never do something like this. “I'm not going to do that,” he added. “When I call them, I'm like, come be in my movie. Smith and Affleck met 20 years ago during the audition process for Smith's directorial debut, Mallrats (1994). Affleck appeared in the film alongside Shannen Doherty, Jason Lee, and Jeremy London.

Since then, the pair have appeared in 1997's Chasing Amy, 1999's Dogma, and 2001's Jay and Silent Bob Strike Bob, with Affleck opposite Jennifer Lopez. They have co-starred in numerous projects, including 2004's Jersey Girl.

Smith was specifically present at Affleck and Lopez's wedding in Georgia in August 2022.

He attended the star-studded event with his wife, Jennifer Schwalbach-Smith. Jason Mewes, a longtime collaborator with Affleck and Smith, also attended the wedding, along with his wife Jordan Monsanto.

He called Affleck “one of my favorite people on the planet” and said Lopez, 55, is also “amazing.”

Smith's new film is loosely based on his childhood. Set in the summer of 1986, the story follows three 16-year-old friends who secretly spend their Saturdays watching movies at their local movie theater.

He told the Post that while “The 4:30 Movie” “feels a little more tame,” it's actually “no different” from his other directorial work.
