Democratic vice presidential candidate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) defends past falsehoods about his military service and trip to China, calling out mixed up dates and “pathological liars like Donald Trump.” He insisted otherwise.
In an interview on “60 Minutes” broadcast Monday, Walz was asked about past statements in which he said he participated in the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests.
“I think people know who I am,” Walz said. “And I think they understand the difference between someone who is not a pathological liar like Donald Trump, who expresses emotion, who tells stories, who gets dates wrong.”
“But I think ultimately it comes down to whether you can be trusted to tell the truth,” correspondent Bill Whitaker responded.
“Well, yes, you can, I think you can,” Walz said. “I admit that I have weak fingers sometimes, but those closest to me know that I keep my word.”
Walz's description of his trip to China is not the only incident that has come under scrutiny since he joined the Democratic Party.
Republicans are attacking him for his description of his time in the Army National Guard, specifically for his earlier comment that he carried weapons of war “during a war” even though he was not deployed in combat.
