Mohamed Bahi charged with witness tampering and destruction of evidence in Mayor Adams case

A former high-ranking official in President Eric Adams' administration may have tampered with witnesses and destroyed evidence in the corruption case against the city's mayor, prosecutors alleged in a shocking indictment Tuesday.

Mohamed Bahi, who was arrested Tuesday morning, became the first City Hall employee to be publicly charged with a crime after Adams' own indictment.

Bahi was scheduled to make his first appearance in Manhattan federal court later Tuesday.

An unsealed indictment against Mr. Bahi charges him with witness tampering and destruction of evidence, alleging that Mr. Bahi was forced to lie to federal investigators about allegations of setting up illegal straw donations for Mr. Adams' 2021 mayoral race. He claims he gave instructions to the house.

According to the complaint, Bahi told the businessman that Adams, identified as “Official 1,” believed the witness “would not cooperate with law enforcement.”

Court documents also allege Bahi deleted the messaging app from his phone before federal authorities executed a search warrant on his home in July.

The accusations came a day after city officials announced that Bahi, who served as the mayor's liaison to the Muslim community, had resigned.

Bahi is one of a number of high-profile figures to resign from City Hall after the mayor's indictment, and there are also apparently separate federal investigations into senior government officials.

Bahi did not return several phone calls from The Post.

When the mayor entered City Hall on Tuesday, Adams dodged questions about Bahi.
