On Tuesday, Musk posted on Twitter that more than 10,000 Starlink satellite kits have already been deployed to provide basic texting capabilities.
“We accelerated the rollout of Starlink direct-to-cell connectivity for hurricane-affected areas,” Musk wrote. “This is provided free of charge by SpaceX and [T-Mobile] To help those in need. ”
They went on to explain that the satellite will provide emergency alerts and text messages to all phones and carriers. T-Mobile phones are already sending out notifications letting customers know they can “text a loved one” or add 9-1-1.
“The FCC also quickly approved special emergency powers for coverage in Florida in advance of Hurricane Milton,” the company said.
To identify if your phone is connected to a Starlink satellite, SpaceX will have one or two signal bars and will display “T-Mobile SpaceX” in the network name.
“Text messages are delivered on a best-effort basis, so if a text message is not sent the first time, users may need to manually retry,” SpaceX also wrote about X. “This service works best outdoors, and in some cases nearby indoors,” windows. ”
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued a warning Wednesday regarding Hurricane Milton, which is expected to make landfall later that day.
“A widespread and destructive storm surge is expected to occur along portions of the west-central coast of the Florida peninsula, with maximum flooding of 10 feet or more,” they said.
