The San Jose State women's volleyball team, the Spartans, defeated the New Mexico State Lobos 3-1 amid continued controversy over the addition of a transgender player to its roster.
The player in question, Blair Fleming, led the way with 18 kills in the match. Brooke Bryant scored 14 points, and Eda Coker, Emma Testi and Brooke Slusser each added nine points.

One of Fleming's kills in the third set raised eyebrows on social media. The set featured great rallies from both teams, with the Spartans leading 13-11 at that point. San Jose State spiked Fleming, and she got one from the Lobos' libero.
The ball appeared to come off a Lobos player's face or chest. The force caused her to fall backwards and fall to the ground. The points went to the Spartans.

University of Nevada says it will not cancel volleyball games against schools with transgender players, citing state law
Last week, a similar play against San Diego State drew attention when Fleming's spike appeared to nail an opponent in the face. But San Diego State University said that's not the case.
“It was incorrectly reported that a San Diego State University student-athlete was hit in the face with a volleyball during a game against San Jose State University,” the school said in a statement. “The ball bounced off the student-athlete's shoulder, but the player was not injured and did not miss a play.”
Fleming's addition to the San Jose State women's volleyball team sparked much controversy, with teams deciding to cancel games and one of Fleming's teammates filing a lawsuit against the NCAA.

Mountain West Conference Commissioner Gloria Nevarez said she was heartbroken by the controversy.
“It's heartbreaking for me as a person on both sides of this issue, a young person, a student-athlete, who is receiving so much negative national attention,” she said. “That doesn't seem right to me.”
