CNN fact-checker says Walz’s claim on Trump economy ‘not true,’ says manufacturing jobs rose under him

CNN fact checker Daniel Dale corrects Democratic vice presidential candidate and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz's claims about the Trump-era economy, saying some numbers are taken out of context. He expressed an important opinion.

“Let's talk about manufacturing,” anchor Kate Bolduan told Dale on “CNN News Central” Tuesday. “Rebuilding manufacturing in the United States is the focus of both campaigns.”

She then played a clip from Walz's recent appearance on ABC's “The View,” in which he said, “As Kamala Harris said, we want you to be able to bring in manufacturing. We know Donald Trump has lost a lot more.” It's just a fact that he created more manufacturing jobs than any other president in American history. ”

CNN's Daniel Dale called out Gov. Tim Walz for false statements about the Trump-era economy.

The media network's fact checkers warned that Walz's claims are simply “not true.”

“Well, if you're going to say something is just a fact, it should be a fact. This is different,” he warned. “It is not true that President Trump lost more manufacturing jobs than any other president. Approximately 4.5 million manufacturing jobs were lost under the George W. Bush administration. At the bottom, there were about 178,000 people.

He added that other presidents, including Mr. Eisenhower, Mr. Ford and Mr. Reagan, lost far more manufacturing jobs during their time in office. “So Mr. Trump doesn't have that record,” Dale said.

Dale also argued that critics of President Trump's economy are ignoring the fact that there was a historic pandemic during his presidency.

“I think it's also worth pointing out as background that President Trump's manufacturing job losses were overwhelmingly caused by the coronavirus pandemic,” he said. “Before the pandemic, manufacturing jobs were up by about 414,000 under the Trump administration. Once again, the president ended up with -178,000 jobs, largely due to the pandemic-related selloff.”
