An Arizona man is accused of firing three shots at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) office in suburban Phoenix, local authorities said.
The Tempe Police Department identified the suspect as Jeffrey Michael Kelly, 60, and charged him with multiple felonies, including terrorism, misdemeanor shooting into a non-residential structure, and unlawful discharge.
Kelly was charged in three separate shootings targeting the DNC office, which shared space with the Harris campaign office, as well as several political signs lined with razor blades in Ahwatukee, Ariz., filled with white powder. He was also arrested on suspicion of “dangling'' a suspicious bag. the police said.
“We appreciate the work of the Tempe Police Department and will continue to cooperate with law enforcement agencies,” Sean McEnany, campaign coordination manager for the Arizona Democratic Party, said in a statement to The Hill.
The most recent incident occurred on October 6 when shots were fired at the Arizona Democratic Party's field office. Police said no one was in the office at the time of the shooting. Another incident occurred in September, just days before Harris visited Arizona, a battleground state in the 2024 presidential election.
The Arizona Democratic Party announced earlier this month that it would close its field office following three shootings.
Kelly's arrest comes in the wake of recent violence related to the 2024 presidential election, with former President Donald Trump, the Republican candidate, having experienced two assassination attempts.
The police department said it would provide further information at a press conference Wednesday.
The Hill has reached out to the DNC and Harris campaign for comment.
