Patrons at a Florida restaurant were shocked Saturday night when a woman drove a golf cart through the dining area, crashing into tables and seriously injuring several people.
Surveillance cameras at Taco Tiki in Jensen Beach recorded the surprising incident that began when a woman accidentally drove a cart up a narrow ramp that led to a covered outdoor dining room. According to ABC 25 in West Palm Beach.
According to video released by the Martin County Sheriff's Office, the cart crushed a table where two women were sitting, then continued to slam into a group of other stunned restaurant patrons.
“It's pretty dramatic,” said Capt. Ruben Romero of the department's highway patrol unit. “Some people almost get crushed under golf carts.”
Several people were injured, including one woman who suffered a fractured pelvis.
However, the captain added that none of the injuries were life-threatening.
Shockingly, authorities said alcohol was not involved in the crash, with Romero noting that the female driver had passed a police breathalyzer test, ABC reported.
“She claimed she had taken a sip of an alcoholic beverage during dinner,” the captain said. “We did all the tests we do with our transportation and drunk driving prevention unit and the results came back that she was not intoxicated at the time.”
Police said an employee from a nearby resort drove the cart to the restaurant and at some point picked up the still-unidentified woman.
Details of the incident are unclear, but the woman eventually tried to drive the cart herself, although she clearly didn't know how.
“She said she did try to turn it on, but she didn't know how to do it and ended up crashing into a table full of people having dinner,” Romero said.
Police charged her with careless driving causing death.
