A small town in southern Mexico has voted to expel U.S.-bound migrants who were staying in the community on their way north. The vote to expel immigrants came after at least one of them appeared to have murdered a local woman.
The attack occurred on September 29th at local station Encuentro Radio in Barras de Coparita, Oaxaca state. reported. The victim, Rebecca Hernandez Flores, 28, was in her home when at least one immigrant who was working on construction nearby broke in and assaulted her, bludgeoning her to death.
A few days later, authorities arrested a migrant from Honduras, identified only by his first name, Jose Enrique AE. The Honduran migrants were part of a caravan headed north, but remained in town for at least two months, working odd construction jobs. It remains unclear whether other persons were involved in the violent killing. The state attorney general's office announced the arrest of the suspect and classified the case as a femicide. This is a special classification under Mexican law for the murder of women because of their gender. This crime can carry harsher penalties than traditional murder.

The controversial move comes as immigration remains Mexico's biggest problem.
