Dodgers pitcher Joe Kelly rips Yankees, says World Series was ‘complete mismatch’

Late last month, the Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated winning their eighth World Series.

They won Game 5 of the series, 7-6, and the American League champion New York Yankees were eliminated. The Dodgers won Game 1 in an instant classic with Freddie Freeman hitting a walk-off grand slam in the 10th inning.

Los Angeles won the next two games and was on the verge of winning the championship.

The Yankees managed to win Game 4, but in Game 5, five inning mistakes proved more than New York could overcome. California native and Dodgers pitcher Joe Kelly wasn't afraid to give an unfiltered account of why the Dodgers beat the Yankees.

The latest version of “Baseball isn't boring” podcast, Kelly criticized the Yankees by suggesting they should have been a lower seed in the playoffs.

“We saw it every game. Just let them throw the ball to the infield. They can't make plays,” Kelly said. “It was a mismatch from the beginning. If there was a playoff reranking, they could be ranked eighth or ninth in the playoffs.

“I'm putting the Padres ahead of them. I'm putting the Phillies ahead of them. I'm putting the Mets ahead of them. I'm putting the Braves ahead of them. The Braves were just unlucky. That. To play a doubleheader.”

Although the Yankees needed only five games to eliminate the Guardians in the ALCS, Kelly believes Cleveland played “better baseball overall.”

“I mean, the Guardians played shit, but the Guardians played better.” [defense] And the baseball has gotten better across the board,” Kelly said before recharacterizing the Dodgers-Yankees matchup as a “complete mismatch.”

New York's defensive woes surfaced long before Game 5. In the series opener, Yankees infielder Gleyber Torres missed a relay throw, allowing Shohei Ohtani to advance to third base. The Dodgers' star designated hitter eventually reached home plate safely, tying the game.

“Shohei got an extra base hit to third base with a sloppy graveyard.'' [Torres] play. It's familiar, we all knew. …We are the Dodgers. …We know every detail. ”

The Yankees enter the postseason with a cloud of uncertainty surrounding Juan Soto. The star outfielder hit a career-high 41 home runs in 2024. However, there is expected to be a battle to sign Soto this offseason as each team looks to sign him.
