An NBC panel on Tuesday questioned whether it was a good idea for Democrats to push to remove President Joe Biden from the top Democratic field as results are known on election night.
The panelists said the 2024 race against Biden is likely to change, with Republican candidate Donald Trump winning key battleground states North Carolina and Georgia and expected to secure several more battleground states. He suggested that the Democratic Party's pressure to withdraw may have backfired. Following Biden's disastrous performance in the June 27 debate, Democrats in the House and Senate joined forces to remove him from the race.
“Jen [Psaki]have the conversations started yet about Joe Biden and the decision to ask him to resign?'' NBC News host Lester Holt asked.
“It will start, it will start depending on the outcome,” former White House press secretary Jen Psaki responded. “And obviously the race hasn't been called yet, but if this isn't a Harris victory, it's definitely going to be part of the discussion. She ran a campaign for 107 days, which is more than any other time in history.” It's something we've never seen before and there will be a lot of questions about exactly that: its timing and its impact.”
Another panelist added that it would be “virtually impossible” for the incumbent party to win with an unpopular president. Harris received the lowest vice presidential favorability rating in the history of the NBC News poll, with a net negative rating of -17 in June 2023. In the poll, 32% of the 1,000 people surveyed had a positive opinion of Harris, while 49% had a negative opinion. As of Tuesday, the vice president's disapproval rating was 49.2%, while his approval rating was 44.3%. According to To FiveThirtyEight.
Amid pressure from his own party to withdraw, Mr. Biden announced his withdrawal from the race in a statement on July 12 and announced his candidacy with the support of Mr. Harris.
