President Donald Trump discredited the idea that women should be paid the same as men in sports, especially when it comes to the WNBA, saying the deals are already done.
In an interview with “Let's go!On a podcast hosted by Jim Gray and legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick, President Trump was asked about “equitable pay” in women's sports.
“Should there be more support and advocacy measures to ensure fair pay across sports?” Gray asked, before mentioning WNBA star Caitlin Clark.
President Trump responded, calling Clark a “phenomenon” in her sports world and saying, “You want to do it, but it's very complicated.”
The former president likened Clark to Tiger Woods, but said he had seen many rookie stars locked into entry-level contracts and kept playing until they got paid.
“It might sound unfair, but someone agrees to the deal. Hopefully she keeps doing it and makes a lot of money,” he continued.
Mr. Trump suggested to Mr. Clark, “Maybe you could give her a bonus.''
Host Gray then mentioned Clark's massive TV ratings, which exceeded normal NBA ratings multiple times throughout 2024.
President Trump refused, saying, “We have to rely on the market.” “You can't say, 'I'm canceling this contract because this person's performance was good.'”
Coach Belichick asked President Trump for his opinion on name, image and likeness payments to NCAA players, wondering if there was a way to balance profits with the desire to play.
President Trump responded by saying he was “surprised the governing bodies didn't appeal more vigorously” the NIL payments.
“I have no idea if they have filed an appeal,” Trump laughed.
“Will college sports as we know them be the same in the next five to 10 years?'' Belichick then asked.
“No, it's not. … It's not going to be the same,” Trump predicted.
“We're probably going to see some schools rise to the top,” he added, noting that some of the more “wealthy schools” are likely to do very well.
President Trump said that inevitably the NCAA could function as another professional sports league with “some very wealthy athletes.”

The Republican, still talking about football, commented on the Guardian cap, an external pad that the NFL has allowed to be used on players' helmets starting with the 2024 season.
“That seems weird!” Trump said, sharing a laugh with the organizers. He said he was unsure about the precautionary aspects of the equipment, noting that there were still violent clashes between players.
”[It’s] “It's still a very violent game,” he continued, “which is why people watch it. It's pretty dangerous, but you don't have to let your kids play it.”
President Trump also expressed disdain for the NFL's new kickoff rules, while adding that America's middle class is being “priced out” of sporting events.
“Fans will buy one ticket for a game, and sometimes for no games. That's the only amount of money they can afford,” Trump argued.
