Shapiro on Trump win in Pennsylvania: 'The will of the people must be respected'

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro (Democratic) on Thursday insisted that “the will of the people must be respected” following former President Trump's election victory.

“Our nation once again held a free, fair, safe and secure election,” Shapiro said in a statement. “As I have always said, the will of the people must be respected, and Pennsylvanians, along with other Republicans and Democrats, voted the same for state and federal office to elect Donald Trump as the next President of the United States. announced that he would be elected.

The governor went on to congratulate the Democratic and Republican candidates depending on Pennsylvania's voting results. Additionally, Shapiro vowed to “never back down from standing up for the freedoms I was elected to protect.”

“I will continue to defend our democracy, protect fundamental rights, and ensure we carry on William Penn's legacy by building a warm and welcoming Union for all.”

Mr. Shapiro's comments came two days after Mr. Trump won a landslide victory in Tuesday's election, winning battleground states such as Pennsylvania. Trump won Pennsylvania by two points, adding the state's 19 Electoral College votes to his tally. The state Senate race has not yet been announced as of Thursday, but Republican David McCormick appears to have a narrow lead over incumbent state Sen. Bob Casey (Democratic). Incumbent Democratic members of the House, Rep. Matt Cartwright (D-Pennsylvania) and Rep. Susan Wilde (D-Pennsylvania), were ousted.

Tuesday's Pennsylvania results marked a significant change from two years ago, when Democrats, including Mr. Shapiro and Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.), won.

The governor's stock has risen since his election, and he advanced to the final round of Vice President Harris' Veep Stakes. Despite Democratic losses in the state, Shapiro is still considered a rising star within the Democratic Party.
