Jets’ Garrett Wilson, Davante Adams becoming dangerous tandem

The fact remains that the Jets are 3-6, and their season could end with just one more loss.

But Davante Adams and Garrett Wilson gave the team a sense of optimism last week, with nearly 200 receiving yards and three touchdowns from Aaron Rodgers in a win over Houston.

They've gotten progressively more dangerous in each of the three games they've played together since Adams arrived from Las Vegas in a trade, but Adams said their relationship started before last season when they played together in New York. It started with a dinner. .

At the time, the two receivers shared a desire to play together at some point in the future. Wilson lectured Adams about how he was his favorite player and about playing with Rodgers, Adams' longtime quarterback in Green Bay.

This story came to fruition last month when the Raiders acquiesced to Adams' transfer request, but the Jets lost a lopsided game to the Steelers in Adams' debut, then lost one game to the lowly Patriots in their second matchup. I dropped it.

Adams said Thursday that the offensive line's performance in the second half of the win over the Texans is what should be expected for the rest of the game.

“100 percent,” Adams said. “We always knew that wasn't going to necessarily happen at the Pittsburgh game. We just got here. [a hamstring] There are injuries, and there are various parts. we have to understand each other. An offense full of playmakers doesn't always work. ”

And when that happens, Adams said, People are impatient and want to see it. Hopefully I feel more comfortable now. ”

Wilson said the benefits of playing with another star receiver were obvious after his first multi-TD game of the season, which featured a sensational one-handed touchdown that once again drew comparisons to Odell Beckham Jr.'s glove.

“Any good receiver would take pride in not being guarded one-on-one,” Wilson said of the added attention Adams brings to the defense. “And if you get guarded, you’re going to make a play.”

Jets wide receivers coach Sean Jefferson said there are various reasons why the combination of Adams and Wilson would be beneficial, especially for Wilson.

“Davante was a great addition to Garrett,” Jefferson said. “He brought the air.” [Wilson] To breathe. now, [defenses] You can't just roll over to Garrett. You must choose your poison now. ”

Jefferson also noted Adams' “attention to detail” in both games and practices.

The admiration is mutual, as Adams said when he was traded to the Jets that he was “about as excited” about the possibility of teaming up with Wilson as he was about reuniting with Rodgers. .

That's what they talked about at dinner.

“We talked about the possibility a little over a year ago,” Adams said of the meeting he organized with Wilson. “We talked about how I'm a big fan of his game. He said I'm his favorite receiver. To be able to work with someone like that…I was his favorite receiver. If he is a student, it's because of the detail and effort I put in, and he's interested in learning.”

The Cardinals, whom the Jets visit on Sunday, are allowing the seventh-most passing yards in the league, so it could be another opportunity for Rodgers to let Adams and Wilson impact the game.

The Jets, who snapped a five-game losing streak, still have virtually no margin for error, but if Adams and Wilson play to their potential, that might not be an issue.
