Brawl erupts in Turkish council meeting

A meeting of Turkish officials escalated into a brawl as tensions escalated over disagreements over the cost of the country's founding celebrations amid continuing economic hardship.

According to media reports, the Ankara Metropolitan City Council allocated 69 million Turkish liras, equivalent to $2 million, for a concert featuring singer Ebru Gündes during Republic Day celebrations on October 29.

A further 71 million lire was set aside for a performance by the rock band Mol ve Otesi, raising questions from critics.

Newsweek reported that the lawmakers exchanged harsh words, with some claiming that they were out of touch with the general public.

Video footage from the meeting shows lawmakers grabbing and shoving each other after the meeting adjourned.
