On Tuesday, just over 54 percent of Colorado voters approved a KK proposal that includes an excise tax on gun and ammunition sales in the state.
CBS News reported Approximately 1.3 million Colorado voters supported the proposal, while 1.1 million opposed it.
The approved tax is 6.5%. That means the new tax would increase the price of a $400 firearm by $26 and the price of a $1,000 firearm by $65.
MSN noticed With the passage of Proposition KK, Colorado will become the second state to impose a tax on Second Amendment instruments. California has adopted a similar, higher sales tax, effective July 1, 2024.
CBS News noted that gun rights advocates are fighting against the tax, arguing that “law-abiding gun owners should not have to pay more in taxes than they already pay.” . They also pointed out that the tax would cause Colorado businesses to lose revenue because many Coloradans would buy guns and ammunition from outside the state to avoid the tax.
