CNN guests clash over culture war ads in Trump’s win: ‘I’m not going to listen to transphobia at this table’

CNN commentator Sharmichael Singleton discussed the importance of culture war issues in determining President-elect Trump's election with author Jay Michaelson. The exchange highlighted the cause of Kamala Harris' loss and the sharp disagreement over advertising targeting biological boys in women's sports.

“I think there are a lot of families who don't believe that boys should play girls' sports,” Singleton said, sparking a debate over transgender athletes' participation in sports.

In response to Singleton's comments, Michelson said: “They are not boys.” “I'm not going to listen to transphobia at this table.”

“If you use derogatory language, I'll interrupt you!” Michelson added. “They're not men. They're not playing women's softball. I'm not going to sit there and listen.”

“Let's reset for a second, because this is a really hot issue. And Sharmichael, I know you and I understand that people have different opinions on this matter. In Jay's honor, I would like to discuss this with respect. ”

“I know you don't mean to be transphobic,” CNN anchor Abby Phillippe told Singleton.

Regarding the Trump campaign's 2020 commercial featuring Kamala Harris expressing support for gender-affirming care for transgender people in prison, Singleton said, “That ad was very effective…I was very impressed by its effectiveness.'' What I'm trying to say is that normal people with children are watching these things.” They say, “This is going a little too far. I don't agree with this, but I think the Democratic Party has moved too far to the left on social issues.” They're uncomfortable with it… They may not agree with that reality, but that's why Republicans keep running these ads over and over again. ”

“That's not a normal person,” Michelson replied. “There is no consensus that they are actually boys. This whole thing about transgender girls is a canard. We're talking about a small portion of the population.”
