On Monday's “CNN Newsroom” broadcast, former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said the priority for ICE enforcement should be public safety and national security threats, which are many and include large numbers. He argued that the idea of deportation would “accelerate the national security threat.” Sanctuary city movements in large cities will cause local law enforcement agencies to refuse to cooperate with ICE to address public safety threats. ”
Mr. Johnson said:[W]When I was DHS Secretary, the way I approached this issue was that I couldn't ask Border Patrol agents or ICE enforcement agents to do anything I wouldn't do myself. And no father could be separated from his two-year-old child, who was born a U.S. citizen, at the border or anywhere else. To me, that is an inhumane policy. Again, the priority should be the criminals. The priority must be public safety, national security threats. And there are enough of them in our prisons today to keep ICE very busy. Pam, I'm concerned about mass deportation, this concept of mass deportation, where the sanctuary city movement intensifies in large cities and local law enforcement responds to public safety threats. They will refuse to cooperate with ICE because of this. ”
