On Saturday, President Trump issued a statement announcing that Schaaf would become his chief of staff and White House chief of staff.

“I am pleased to announce that William Owen Scharf will serve as Chief of Staff and White House Chief of Staff,” President Trump's statement read. “Will is a highly accomplished attorney and will be an important part of my White House team.”

“Mr. Schaaf played a critical role in defeating the election interference and legal battles brought against me, including winning a historic immunity verdict in the Supreme Court.” “Will will make us all proud by making America great again.”

Mr. Scharf is a graduate of Princeton University, received a law degree from Harvard University, clerked for two federal appeals court judges, and served as an assistant U.S. attorney in St. Louis.

In addition to his experience as a prosecutor, Schaaf worked for Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens (R-Missouri) and was employed by conservative public relations firm CRC Advisors.

Schaaf recently ran for Missouri attorney general, losing in the Republican primary to Andrew Bailey (R-Missouri) and defeating Elad Gross (D-Missouri) in the general election earlier this month.

President-elect Trump announced Schaaf's appointment shortly before nominating Chris Wright for Secretary of Energy.
