Late in the first quarter of Saturday's game between Colorado and Utah, Buffaloes two-way star Travis Hunter missed a receiver during coverage, deflected the ball back deep into Utah's territory for an interception, then stood up and took a shot. Ta. Celebratory Heisman pose. It was a remarkable moment in a Heisman-worthy season filled with Colorado standouts.
But it may have been what happened late in the first half that cemented his status as a Heisman Trophy winner.
Colorado drove just before halftime, and the Buffaloes faced a fourth-and-8 situation within Utah. Head coach Deion Sanders continued his attack on the field, with quarterback Shedur Sanders looking in Hunter's direction on a corner route between two Utah defenders.
Approximately 99 times out of 100, this path will be split.
But hunters make the impossible possible.
The Colorado star stayed in the air long enough to beat both defenders and continued to take high-flying hits before collapsing on his shoulders on the reception.
Believe it or not, Hunter wasn't done with his Heisman moment against Utah.
Late in the game, with Colorado still holding a big lead, the offense made a trick play that allowed Hunter to make a comeback. But Utah's defense was ready. Hunter was pinned down about 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage, and it was a disaster.
You probably know how this ends.
Somehow, somehow, Hunter cuts through Utah's defense and turns a close call situation into another emphatic statement in his Heisman campaign.
Overall, Hunter had five receptions for 55 yards, one rushing touchdown and one interception against the Utes. He did this while playing an incredible 132 snaps. According to OptaSTATSHe became the first NFL or FBS player in the last 24 years to have 50 receiving yards, a rushing touchdown, and an interception in the same game. Who was the last player to accomplish that feat? NFL's Champ Bailey at the Washington vs. Arizona game on December 24, 2000.
After the game, Hunter's coach made his own Heisman pitch.
“I can't let their hatred of me get in the way of my children's success…Give them what they deserve, dude.”
