Boston's sanctuary city designation was emphasized by Democratic Mayor Michelle Wu over the weekend as President-elect Donald Trump ramps up plans to deport large numbers of illegal immigrants soon after taking office for a second term.

“The last thing we want is to be part of our economy, part of our school system, part of our community, part of the fabric of our city. “It's about people suddenly feeling like they have to retreat into the shadows,” Wu said. In an interview Sunday, he spoke about undocumented immigrants living in Boston.
Mr. Wu was a City Council member when the city passed a trust law that prohibited Boston from interrogating, detaining or arresting people for non-criminal immigration purposes. Nevertheless, she supported the law when it was first enacted in 2014 and updated in 2019.
“This ordinance authorizes law enforcement to cooperate with federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement in investigating crimes such as human trafficking and drug trafficking,” the spokesperson said. Wowa local Boston outlet.
Wu said Boston's sanctuary status is critical to ensuring that the city's undocumented immigrants feel safe and able to thrive.
“We want migrants to know that they are safe for everyone and to feel safe in contacting emergency services, reporting crimes, seeking help and generally being part of our community. I hope it is,” she said.
Other Massachusetts politicians also oppose Trump's deportation plan.
Democratic Gov. Maura Healey says the Massachusetts State Police will “absolutely not cooperate” with immigration enforcement. Attorney General Andrea Campbell told reporters that she and other Democratic attorneys general across the country are prepared to file a lawsuit against the incoming administration. Mr. Healey filed approximately 100 lawsuits against the Trump administration during his tenure as attorney general.
Wu added further context to his view of the situation.
“Elections have consequences, the federal government is responsible for certain actions, and cities, not individual cities, can overturn or nullify some of them,” she argued. “But what we can do is make sure that we do our part to protect our population in every way possible and that we actually protect everyone by spreading fear and having a massive economic impact.” Please refrain from cooperating with efforts that threaten safety.”
In recent years, many undocumented immigrants in the Boston area have been arrested by ICE on charges such as child sex crimes and then released into society.
ICE this month arrested a suspect from Colombia who was charged with enticing a minor under 16, distributing obscene pornographic material, and posing or displaying a child in an indecent manner. It was announced that the migrants had been detained. The agency said ICE's request to detain him was ignored.
ICE agents in Boston also arrested five people in March, including four suspected child rapists and an MS-13 member. MS-13 is a group of potentially dangerous criminals that officials say were released due to local sanctuary policies that denied detainee requests.
But the Trump administration is unlikely to be deterred by the lack of cooperation from these states and local governments. President-elect Trump’s border czar Tom Homan sent a message to these jurisdictions this month.
“If you don't want to work with us, just totally quit. We'll try.'' What this means is that instead of sending 100 agents to Boston, we will send 200 agents to Boston. We're going to get the job done,” Homan said.
Meanwhile, conservative social media users highlighted a clear “double standard” and said Democrats are hypocritical in criticizing the deportation of illegal immigrants.
“Democrats are saying we should hate Trump and shouldn't vote for him because he's a 'criminal,' and they're talking about lawsuits in court, but they're breaking the law. They want to support, feed and house them in order to come here legally, when they are actually real criminals and foreigners who don't respect the system enough. Please make it meaningful,” one Truth Social user posted.
