UK weather live: rail cancellations and road delays as snowy conditions create ‘first taste of winter’ | UK weather

As we mentioned earlier, the Met Office has issued snow and ice warnings for various parts of the country. This is what they say:

Snow and hail showers will affect northern parts of Scotland at times, becoming heavier and more frequent…through much of Tuesday and then overnight into Wednesday morning. 2 to 5 cm of snow is likely to accumulate quite widely, with up to 10 cm in some places by the end of Tuesday, and perhaps 15 to 20 cm accumulating above 300 metres.

The most likely scenario is for most of the snow to accumulate on hills, with 5 to 10 cm possible above 200 metres and perhaps as much as 15 to 20 cm above 300 metres. There is a chance of snow settling at lower levels, where 5 to 10 cm would prove much more disruptive – this remains uncertain, but seems most likely across parts of Derbyshire. As rain, sleet and snow clears from the north of the warning area by early Tuesday morning, ice may form on untreated surfaces.

\n

Snow is expected on high ground above 200 to 300 metres, where several cm snowfall is likely, and perhaps 5 to 10 cm across the higher parts of the Sperrins and Mournes. Settling snow looks unlikely on low ground. However, as skies clear overnight, temperatures will fall widely below freezing with ice forming on untreated surfaces. This will lead to difficult travelling conditions.

Where are weather warnings issued?

As mentioned earlier, the Japan Meteorological Agency has issued snowfall warnings throughout the country. they say:

For northern Scotland, Orkney and Shetland:

Snow and hail will affect northern Scotland at times and will become heavier and more frequent throughout most of Tuesday and overnight into Wednesday morning. Two to five centimeters of snow is expected to accumulate over a fairly wide area, with up to 10 centimeters expected in some places and possibly 15 to 20 centimeters above 300 meters by the end of Tuesday.

For North Wales, the Midlands and the North of England:

The most likely scenario is that most of the snow will accumulate on the hills, reaching 5-10 cm above 200 meters and 15-20 cm above 300 meters. Snow can become entrenched at lower levels, and 5 to 10 cm of snow could have an even greater impact. Although this is still uncertain, it looks most likely that snow will fall in parts of Derbyshire. Once the rain, sleet and snow clears north of the warning area by early Tuesday morning, ice may form on untreated surfaces.

For Northern Ireland:

A few centimeters of snow is expected at higher elevations above 200-300 metres, with perhaps 5-10 centimeters expected in the highlands of the Sperrin and Morne Ranges. Snow is unlikely to settle in low-lying areas. However, when the night sky clears, temperatures drop significantly below freezing and ice forms on untreated surfaces. This makes driving conditions difficult.

Meanwhile, the charity Asthma + Lung UK urged people living with lung disease to be “particularly careful”.

The charity warned that the cold weather could cause potentially life-threatening asthma attacks or “flares” for people with other lung conditions.

Erica Radford, the charity's head of health advice, said:

If you have a lung condition, you are twice as likely to end up in A&E in winter. We want to help you stay healthy, but people with lung disease suffer needlessly every day and more lives will be at risk if we don't take urgent action.

Dr Agostinho Souza, UKHSA’s Head of Extreme Events, said:

This is the first Amber Cold Weather Health Alert of the season, but more are expected as winter approaches. It's important to check on your vulnerable friends, family, and neighbors to make sure they're well prepared for the onset of cold weather. This is especially true for older adults and others at high risk.

The Alzheimer's Society has warned that cold weather can be “particularly difficult” for people with dementia. “For people with dementia, cold temperatures can be difficult to adapt to and they may not always be able to tell that they are cold, or even realize that they are cold,” the charity says. said. The newspaper advised the public to check if they have a loved one, friend or neighbor living with the condition.

UKHSA's Dr Agostinho Souza said: 'This is the first Amber Cold Weather Alert of the season, but we expect more as winter approaches, so we need to protect our vulnerable friends, family and neighbours. It is important to check and ensure safety.” They are well prepared for the onset of cold weather. Especially if they are elderly or at high risk. ”

Caroline Abrahams, director of Age UK, said the charity was concerned that the loss of winter fuel payments could make many older people “even more anxious” about keeping the heat on this winter. He said that

“While some people may think that high utility bills and food prices mean they have to eat less and turn off the heat, prolonged exposure to low temperatures can be harmful to health, especially if you are already elderly. “You're trying to manage an existing disease,” she said. “Cold weather increases blood pressure, which increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. Breathing cold air can also increase the risk and effects of serious illnesses such as influenza and pneumonia.”

The Met Office issued three yellow warnings for snow and ice for the North, Midlands, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, warning of potential for stranded vehicles, power outages and rural road closures.

A yellow alert remains in place for England until 11am, while Scotland remains under a warning until 10am on Wednesday. The UK Health and Safety Authority (UKHSA) has issued the first amber cold health alert of the season, saying the alert conditions could be dangerous for vulnerable people, including the elderly.

The Met Office described the situation as a “first taste of winter” and said 5 to 10 centimeters of snow could cause havoc in England, with Derbyshire the area most likely to be affected. Ta.
