Trans Democrat responds to Johnson ban on biological males in congressional bathrooms for women

The first openly transgender lawmaker elected to the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday responded to a ban on biological males in women-only Congressional restrooms.

Democratic Congresswoman Sarah McBride of Delaware released The statement comes after Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson announced the ban earlier in the day.

“I'm just a woman trying to feel safe urinating in the women's bathroom when no men are in there.”

“I'm not here to fight over bathrooms. I'm here to fight for Delawareans and reduce costs faced by families,” McBride wrote in a social media post. “Like other members, I intend to abide by the rules outlined by Chairman Johnson, even if I disagree with them.”

Mr McBride went on to argue that the fiasco was a distraction from the “real problems” facing the country.

“I look forward to getting to know my future colleagues on both sides of the aisle,” Mr. McBride continued. “Each of us, [sic] We were sent here because the voters saw something of value in us. I've loved seeing those qualities in the future colleagues I've met so far, and I look forward to seeing them in everyone in January. I hope all my colleagues strive as much as I do. ”

The controversy arose after McBride's election led South Carolina Republican Rep. Nancy Mace to propose a bill in Congress that would ban biological males from women's restrooms.

“I'm going to stand on the brink and stand in the way of the radical left who think it's okay to have penises in women's locker rooms, in bathrooms, in locker rooms,” Mace told reporters.

Mr Johnson said in a statement that Parliament has unisex toilets in addition to separate toilets for men and women, and that each MP has his own toilet in his office.

“I'm just a woman trying to feel safe and pee in the women's bathroom when no men are allowed in.” mace said on social media.
