I Want to Talk review – Abhishek Bachchan is Mad Men-style ad man who declares war on cancer | Movies

THis drama starts promisingly enough with a lively and assertive voiceover that introduces the protagonist Arjun (Abhishek Bachchan). He's a Don Draper type of guy. I have a top job in the advertising industry and love to walk around providing wisdom and direction to my team. “I want at least 17 seconds to pull the cheese,” he insists to his subordinate working on the pizza commercial. Similar to Mad Men, his home life isn't all that stable, but he proudly describes himself as a weekend dad who shows up for his daughter when it matters, and feels like he has a hard job. are. But it is clear that pride is lost before it is lost.

The problem here is that you suddenly receive a cancer diagnosis out of nowhere. Arjun is given about 100 days to live. Being a tenacious man who refuses to see himself as a statistic, he decides to fight. Here the film begins to intertwine with a controversial story in cancer support circles. Some find it empowering to think that cancer can be fought. Others see this as insulting, suggesting that when someone dies of cancer, it's not an incurable and often fatal disease, but an element of not fighting hard enough or quitting smoking in some way. Suggests. Arjun certainly believes that he has been forced into a war that he can win through sheer force of will and undertakes a series of surgeries.

The film features many standard tearjerker movie tropes, including his physical changes and the rise and fall of various relationships. Arjun suffers from some kind of suicidal thoughts and at one point plans to drive his car off a cliff “like Thelma and Louise”.

The problem with all of this is that the movie spends as much time establishing Arjun's pre-diagnosis life and personality as his pizza ads focused on pulling cheese. Mad Men left Don Draper in freefall after many seasons, and that's what made his downfall so convincing. The film doesn't have much luxury in terms of running time, but a little more setup would have greatly benefited what happens next. The fact that it's based on a true story doesn't help much either, unless you probably know the guy in real life.

“I Want to Talk” will be released on November 22nd.
